Reflection/Goals/logs/vita...and more!

REFLECTION:
Reflection always provides the opportunity to grow.  In developing my Professional Development Plan, I was forced to slow down and focus not only on my weaknesses, but take a long look at my professional goals.  I am very goal driven and feel lost without personal and professional goals. This actually prompted many discussions with my family as we plan for our future and what it really means for me to become a superintendent, and how that affects everyone.  When I once interviewed for a principal position, I left the interview feeling embarrassed and incompetent. It was the worst interview I have ever had, and yet I learned more from that interview than any other. For one, it was the first time I had ever interviewed for a job and didn’t get an offer. It was also the first time I was so nervous that I couldn’t think straight and my answers reflected just that. I think part of the reason I was so nervous is I knew everyone on the interview team.  I called two of them and requested the opportunity to visit and get feedback from my interview.  The point of sharing this is that one of them said, “Sheri, if you are interviewing for a job, you must act like a principal (at this time I was a high school Assistant Principal), answer like a principal, and think broader.”  So as I prepared my professional development plan, that is what I did, thought like a superintendent.  I considered the big picture and what provides the foundation for a school district that is focused on continuous improvement and student learning. As a result I realized my knowledge needed to grow in areas such as budget processes, bond processes, policy development and review, board relations, strategic planning, and my personal plan for continuing my education.
