My desired goal is to move directly to a superintendency, although, I am aware that I may need to stair-step my way to that position. I have been an administrator at all three levels. I have been an assistant principal at the high school level in a large district, a middle school principal in a 2A district and am currently an elementary principal in a large district. I am hoping that with these experiences I can find an opportunity to go directly to a superintendent position. Therefore, I will write my goals for becoming a first year superintendent.
GOAL/OBJECTIVE | PROCESS | RESOURCES |
1. Build relationships and trust in the school and community | Start on day one by meeting and greeting everyone with a smile and encouraging word. After that I would become involved in community activities and district activities. They must learn about me just as I must learn about them in order to create a culture of trust. I will spend much time watching, learning and greeting others. | Names; Calendar of community and district activities |
2. Develop a comprehensive knowledge and understanding regarding district demographics, student data, current curriculum, all facilities and different levels of district employees and jobs | This process would begin before I even interviewed for the job. I would need to go in with a base knowledge of the district. After month I should have met with various stakeholders in order to broaden my understanding of the district as a whole. By the end of the year, I should have a solid understanding of the district. | AEIS reports; District Assessment Reports; District Facility information; District HR information; District Curriculum; District budget and strategic plan |
3. Collaboratively create a common, aligned vision for the district and create a culture of trust and continuous improvement. If these things are already in place, then I would continue to support and encourage growth in these areas. | This process would begin before I interview for the job. I would review the district website which should include the current district goals and vision. During the first week I would meet with various teams and get to know the culture and vision of each district group and visit campuses. Throughout the first month, I would continue these meetings and begin to focus on alignment. During the first year, I would do a lot of observation and begin to collaboratively develop a vision or direction for the district with the various stakeholders, starting with the school board. | Current data regarding the district and campus visions. The philosophy and processes of the district regarding continuous improvement |
This is great. One of my friends said when he wanted to make the move. He made sure to go with "school board" lead serches. He felt like the supt search companies seemed to already have someone picked, but went through the "motions" for perception sake. I know you will be a great leader.
ReplyDeleteI love that your plan includes your proactive and intentional research. I agree with you in that we cannot wait until we get the job to begin the research. I also believe that building those relationships from day one and throughout the year is imperative. Your design of this plan in a table is helpful for organizational purposes, too.
